Why Alerts Beat Watching a Map
Live GPS answers "where is my child right now?" — but you have to ask. Geofencing answers a better question automatically: "did anything change?" That difference matters for both sides of the relationship. For parents, it means reassurance without vigilance: you don't need to remember to check at 3:40 whether the school bus made it, because the "arrived home" alert will simply appear. For kids, it means less scrutiny, not more — a parent who gets automatic arrival notifications has no reason to watch the dot move or send a stream of check-in messages.
Exit alerts cover the other direction: the situations where a child leaving a place is the signal worth knowing. A child who leaves school mid-morning, a young one who wanders out of the yard, a teen who heads out after curfew — these are exactly the events a parent wants surfaced immediately, and exactly the ones a periodically-checked map is likely to miss. A Practical Zone Setup That Actually Works
Geofencing fails in one of two ways: too few zones (so it tells you nothing) or too many noisy ones (so you stop reading the alerts). Here's a setup that avoids both:
- • 1. Begin with home and school. These two zones cover the majority of a school-age child's week and generate the two alerts you'll actually rely on: left for school, arrived home.
- • 2. Draw generously. Include the whole property in the zone — playground, sports field, drop-off loop — not just the building. GPS drift near a tight boundary is the number-one cause of false exit alerts.
- • 3. Add one zone per regular activity. Tuition center, practice ground, a grandparent's flat, the friend's house your child visits every week. If a place appears in the routine less than weekly, a glance at the live map is usually enough — it doesn't need a zone.
- • 4. Choose alert direction deliberately. Arrival alerts suit places your child travels to (school, home, practice). Exit alerts suit places they're expected to stay (school during class hours, home in the evening). Turning on both for every zone doubles your notifications without doubling their value.
- • 5. Prune each term. When the timetable changes, delete the zones that no longer match it. A stale zone that fires irrelevant alerts trains you to ignore the one alert that matters.
Geofencing, Consent, and Proportion
Well-used geofencing is arguably the most privacy-respecting form of location safety: rather than continuous observation, you learn only about boundary crossings at places you and your child already agreed matter. That framing works best when it's explicit.
